Amazon Alexa

What is Amazon Alexa?

Amazon Alexa is Amazon's voice assistant, built into Echo speakers and other devices, that can search for and order products by voice, saying something like "Alexa, reorder my usual paper towels" and having it placed without opening an app or website. Launched in 2014 alongside the original Echo speaker, it was one of the earliest mainstream examples of voice-based shopping, letting people buy things through spoken conversation rather than typing or clicking.

Why it matters

Alexa's shopping capabilities were substantially overhauled with Alexa+, a generative-AI upgrade Amazon launched in February 2025 that replaced Alexa's older rules-based voice commands with large-language-model-driven conversation and reasoning. In May 2026, Amazon went a step further by merging Alexa+'s personalization with the product expertise of its Rufus chatbot into a unified assistant called Alexa for Shopping, extending beyond voice to text and touch across the Amazon app, website, and Echo Show, and adding agentic features like comparison guides for big purchases, price tracking, and auto-buy at a target price. This reflects a broader repositioning of Alexa: from a voice-command convenience feature bolted onto Amazon's existing storefront, to a more autonomous, cross-modal shopping agent that Amazon is betting can compete with AI-assisted shopping in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
