Zero-Click Buying

Completing a purchase entirely within a chat or AI interface, without ever visiting the merchant's website.

What is Zero-Click Buying?

Zero-click buying means completing a purchase entirely inside a chat or AI interface, without ever visiting the merchant's own website. For example, finishing a checkout right inside ChatGPT or a voice assistant, with payment and confirmation happening in that same conversation rather than redirecting to a store's page. It's the shopping-specific version of the broader "zero-click" trend where people get what they need without clicking through to an external site.

Why it matters

The term borrows from "zero-click search," where a large share of Google searches (often cited around 60–70%) end without a click to any website because the answer appears directly on the results page; zero-click buying extends that idea to the transaction itself. In practice, true zero-click buying is still limited: OpenAI's Instant Checkout (launched September 29, 2025 with Etsy, expanded toward Shopify merchants) was the highest-profile attempt at in-chat purchase completion, but OpenAI scaled it back in March 2026 after adoption stayed low (reportedly around 8% of U.S. adult ChatGPT users tried it in its first month) and shifted toward sending users to retailer-branded checkout experiences instead. Perplexity's "Buy with Pro" is a more durable example still operating as of 2026, letting Perplexity Pro subscribers complete purchases without leaving the app. This makes zero-click buying more of an aspirational end-state that individual products are approaching unevenly, rather than a settled standard.
