AI Shopping
Product discovery that happens through an AI chat or answer interface instead of a traditional search results page.
What is AI Shopping?
AI shopping refers to discovering products through an AI chat or answer interface (like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity) instead of typing keywords into a traditional search engine and scanning a page of blue links. A shopper might describe what they need in plain language ("a lightweight laptop for travel under $900") and get back a short list of recommended products with reasoning, rather than millions of ranked results to sift through themselves. It covers the discovery and research stage of shopping, whether or not the purchase itself happens inside that same interface.
Why it matters
The shift matters commercially because it changes how products get found at all: instead of ranking in a search-engine results page via SEO, being recommended by an AI model depends on structured product data, being cited as a source, and appearing in the training or retrieval data the model draws on. Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews, ChatGPT's shopping results, and Perplexity's product cards all now surface curated product picks with images, pricing, and reviews directly in the answer, ahead of or instead of a conventional results list. Analysts estimate AI-influenced e-commerce transactions are approaching roughly $194 billion by 2026, and brands cited inside AI-generated answers have reported meaningfully higher click-through than brands that aren't, making visibility inside these AI answers a distinct optimization target separate from traditional SEO.
