What is Agentic Commerce Optimization (ACO)?
Agentic Commerce Optimization means preparing a product's data and a store's infrastructure so it has a higher likelihood of being surfaced and recommended during the discovery phase of an AI-driven shopping journey, when an autonomous AI shopping agent (not a human shopper) is searching, comparing options, and narrowing down a shortlist on a person's behalf. This might mean exposing structured, machine-readable product feeds with accurate price, stock, and specification data that an AI agent can read, compare against alternatives, and confidently recommend, rather than skip over in favor of a competitor with cleaner data.
Why it matters
The practice sits on top of genuinely new, concretely specified infrastructure rather than being purely aspirational: OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) went live in September 2025, letting ChatGPT users complete in-chat purchases starting with Etsy sellers and expanding toward Shopify's merchant base, and Google announced a competing Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in January 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, aimed at AI Mode and Gemini. "Agentic Commerce Optimization" as a named discipline, however, is informal marketing and SEO-adjacent terminology describing the practices needed to get recommended at the discovery stage of this new journey (clean structured product data, accurate real-time inventory and pricing feeds, and machine-readable policy information (returns, shipping)) rather than a term either company has formally defined. No standards body governs the term itself; only the underlying commerce protocols (ACP, UCP) are formally specified.
