What is AI Shopping Agent?
An AI shopping agent is software that can search for products, compare options, and complete a purchase on a person's behalf with little back-and-forth needed at each step. A person might say "find me running shoes for flat feet under $120 and order the best-reviewed pair," and the agent searches multiple sites, weighs price against reviews, and places the order. Unlike a chatbot that just gives advice, a shopping agent is meant to actually finish the transaction, not just help someone decide.
Why it matters
In practice, current AI shopping agents sit somewhere between full autonomy and assisted browsing, most still ask for explicit confirmation before spending money, and rely on merchant-side integrations (an API, a checkout protocol, or an app inside the AI platform) rather than freely clicking around arbitrary websites like a human would. This is why standards like the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) and Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) matter: they give merchants a structured way to expose inventory, pricing, and checkout to an agent instead of requiring the agent to scrape a storefront built for humans. OpenAI's rollback of ChatGPT's own in-chat checkout in early 2026, in favor of routing agents to retailer-run apps for the final purchase step, illustrates that the industry is still working out how much of the transaction the agent itself should complete versus hand off to the merchant.
