Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
The practice of optimizing content to be selected as the direct answer in AI or search answer boxes.
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of shaping content so it gets picked as the direct answer (the one shown at the top of a results page, read aloud by a voice assistant, or given first inside an AI chat response) rather than just linked to among many other results. A recipe site practicing AEO, for instance, formats a recipe's exact ingredient list and steps so it can be lifted cleanly into a featured snippet or a chatbot's answer.
Why it matters
The term predates the current generative-AI wave: industry sources widely credit digital marketer Jason Barnard with coining it in 2017, in response to Google's featured snippets and direct answers starting to displace the traditional list of blue links, and it picked up further journalistic coverage from 2018 onward. Unlike GEO, AEO has no peer-reviewed academic origin and no governing standards body. Its scope has been defined and redefined by individual agencies and marketers, and by 2024–2026 usage of the term expanded to also cover being selected as the answer inside AI chat assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, not just featured snippets and voice results. In current industry writing it overlaps substantially with GEO and LLMO, and different commentators draw the boundaries between the three differently, so treat AEO as informally-defined vocabulary rather than a fixed technical specification.
