What is ChatGPT Apps SDK?
The Apps SDK is a developer toolkit that lets outside companies build interactive mini-apps that run directly inside a ChatGPT conversation, rather than sending the user away to a separate website. A user might ask ChatGPT to plan a trip, and a travel app built with the SDK could render an interactive map and booking widget right in the chat, without the user ever leaving the conversation. It turns ChatGPT into more of an app platform than a single chatbot.
Why it matters
OpenAI introduced the Apps SDK at its DevDay event on October 6, 2025, alongside a new "apps in ChatGPT" experience, with launch partners including Spotify, Booking.com, Zillow, Figma, and Canva. The SDK is built on top of the Model Context Protocol (MCP): a developer's MCP server supplies the tools and data, while the SDK adds a layer for rendering custom, interactive UI components inside the chat window. It shipped in preview at launch, with OpenAI opening app submissions and a browsable app directory later in 2025, and the SDK is open source with OpenAI stating there are no plans to deprecate it. OpenAI has tied the Apps SDK to its broader commerce push, including the Agentic Commerce Protocol that powers in-chat checkout for participating merchants.
