What is Citation Rate?
Citation rate is the percentage of relevant AI answers on a given topic that include a source citation at all, regardless of which website that citation points to. If you ask an AI assistant the same type of question ten times and six of those answers include any clickable source link, the citation rate for that topic is 60%. This tells you how often AI answers back up their claims with sources versus answering unsourced, without saying anything about who is being cited.
Why it matters
Citation rate is a topic-level or query-set-level aggregate, distinct from citation share (which source gets cited) and citation usage rate (how citations appear within a single answer); it measures the baseline presence of any sourcing at all. In practice, citation behavior varies enormously by AI system and query type: systems built around live web retrieval (Perplexity, ChatGPT's search mode, Google AI Overviews) attach citations to most or all of their answers by design, while a model answering purely from training data without invoking search may produce zero citations even on factual topics. Citation behavior for the same topic can also shift substantially over time as AI systems update which pages they draw from, so citation patterns should be treated as evolving rather than fixed.
