Mention Status

Whether a brand appears in an AI answer as a plain mention, a linked citation, or not at all.

What is Mention Status?

Mention status describes where a brand lands on a simple spectrum every time an AI answer is checked for it: does it appear as a plain text mention with no link, does it appear as a linked citation, or does it not appear at all? Tracking mention status over time for the same set of questions lets a brand see whether it's gaining or losing ground in AI-generated answers, and whether any mentions it does get come with a traceable link back to its site.

Why it matters

This is an informal classification used by AI-visibility monitoring tools rather than a term with a standards body behind it, but it maps onto a real behavioral distinction in how generative AI systems compose answers: a model can name a brand purely from what it learned during training or from unlinked mentions across the web (yielding an unlinked mention), or it can pull the name in specifically because it retrieved and cited a source discussing that brand (yielding a linked citation), or the brand may simply be absent from the sampled answer (no mention). Because a single query can be re-run and return different results across models, time, and even repeated calls to the same model, mention status is usually tracked as a rate across a batch of prompts and check-ins rather than a single yes/no fact, and vendors differ in exactly how they define and count each category. Ranketta tracks this distinction directly, reporting whether each tracked prompt produced an unlinked mention, a linked citation, or no mention at all.
