AI Visibility

Visibility measured specifically inside AI-generated answers rather than traditional search results.

What is AI Visibility?

AI visibility refers to how present and prominent a brand, product, or website is inside AI-generated answers (chatbot responses, AI overviews in search results, and AI-powered shopping assistants) rather than in traditional blue-link search results. If someone asks an AI assistant for product recommendations and a brand is named in the answer, that brand has AI visibility for that query; if it's absent, it doesn't, regardless of how well that brand ranks in classic Google search. It's essentially the AI-era counterpart to search engine visibility.

Why it matters

AI visibility is not a standardized, universally-defined metric. It is an emerging industry term used loosely across marketing tools and agencies since roughly 2024, when generative AI search features (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity) began meaningfully diverting query traffic away from conventional search results pages. Most vendors operationalize it as some blend of appearance frequency (how often a brand shows up across a defined set of tracked prompts), mention position, and citation presence, often rolled into a composite 0–100 score, but the exact formula differs by tool and none is peer-reviewed or standardized. The academic grounding for the underlying idea, that content visibility in LLM-generated responses is a distinct, optimizable property separate from search ranking, traces to the 2024 'Generative Engine Optimization' (GEO) paper from Princeton and Georgia Tech researchers, which showed content-side changes could shift visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% in controlled tests. Platforms built specifically to track this, such as Ranketta, run a brand's tracked prompt set across multiple AI providers on a recurring basis and report the resulting visibility numbers back as an ongoing metric rather than a one-time audit.
