Google AI Overviews
An AI-generated summary Google shows above the normal results for a search query.
What is Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews is an AI-generated summary that appears above Google's normal search results for many queries, pulling together information from multiple web pages into a single written answer with source links. Searching "how do I remove a red wine stain" might show a short AI-written summary of steps at the top of the page, with the usual list of website results still available below it. Unlike AI Mode, which replaces the results page entirely, AI Overviews sits on top of the familiar search results format.
Why it matters
AI Overviews grew out of Google's 2023 Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment and launched broadly in the U.S. on May 14, 2024 at Google I/O, reaching hundreds of millions of U.S. searchers within the following week and rolling out to over a billion users globally by the end of 2024; by 2026 industry trackers put its reach at over 2.5 billion users a month across 200+ countries. Because AI Overviews often answer a query directly on the results page, they've been linked to rising "zero-click" search behavior (some estimates put the share of Google searches ending without any click as high as 60–70%) which has made appearing as a cited source inside an Overview (rather than merely ranking in organic results) a distinct visibility goal for publishers and retailers, with some studies reporting notably higher click-through for brands cited inside an Overview versus those that aren't.
