AI Visibility Gap
The difference between how visible a brand realistically could be on a topic and how visible it actually is today.
What is AI Visibility Gap?
The AI visibility gap describes the distance between how visible a brand could plausibly be on a topic (based on how competitors perform) and how visible it actually is in AI-generated answers today. In practice this usually surfaces as specific prompts or topics where a competitor is named and the brand in question isn't mentioned at all.
Why it matters
This is informal terminology coined by AI-visibility and GEO vendors around 2024–2025 rather than a metric defined by any standards body, so its exact calculation varies by tool. Industry usage generally splits it into sub-types: topic gaps (whole subject areas where a brand never appears), prompt-level gaps (specific questions it's absent from), sentiment gaps (mentioned, but less favorably than rivals), and citation gaps (mentioned without a supporting source link). Because different platforms benchmark against different baselines, some against competitor parity, others against a theoretical maximum score, the same brand can show very different "gap" sizes depending on which tool measured it. Ranketta surfaces this gap directly, flagging specific topics and prompts where a tracked brand is absent while a named competitor is not.
